A date that will live in infamy.

A day like no other in the history of the United States for many reasons. The country sits with more issues than anyone can remember, in a war that no  one wants any longer and an economy that will test most by the time it is over. A man different than any other who has been elected in so many ways and with many thinking he has the best chance to get us out of all this mess.

I hope we can give him the space to do what needs to be done. With the Internet I hope we all realize by now it is easy for a vocal minority to sway opinions – Beth Harte pointed out not so long ago how this can happen. Valeria ( I finally spelled it correctly – sorry Valeria for my past transgressions)with her post today points out how we got here using social media.

I think the most interesting thing will be how the new president will use his new strength. Not from the congress or senate but with the people directly. I think we might find out sooner than later. Can you imagine if a congressperson decides they have a different agenda than the president and the president uses the social media tools and massive emails collected to move this person in a different direction.

I hope we will see some of this in action. Perhaps we finally have the tools to really be a government for the people by the people. We will need to be on guard to not allow vocal minorities to have too much sway but it will be good to have ALL in the conversation.

    There’s a reason that our founding fathers chose representative rather than direct democracy. The dangers of mob rule are well reported in history … http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobocracy. How informed and deliberative can we count the 3 million in Obama’s email database to be on any given issue? And don’t get me wrong, I voted for President O and I am excited about his administration.

    Tom – interesting points however more and more we are seeing the vocal minorities getting more attention then their numbers should warrant and I believe the 3 million is more like 13 million. All I am suggesting is that with this new technology and the ability to reach out and energize more directly that it will have a tremendous effect on how “democracy: works in the future.

    Should be interesteing to see how it pans out. Whenever a change of this magnitude happens in the administration of country, there is potential for a big swing, hopefully it is in a positive direction.
