Is your website still acting more like a billboard?

When the Internet was born, oh so many years ago, all websites were not much more than a brochure with a variation of using this new technology more effectively.  Lets fast forward to 2009  – most of the websites I see still are not much more than a billboard. Many refer to the Internet as the information super highway but that is no reason we continue to think of our websites as a billboard along the way. Now before the billboard association gets mad at me – I understand there is a place for a billboards but it is no longer what is expected on the Internet.

The bigger question is – why would you want to? Online you have the ability to blog, join a community, and many other ways of exploring for information and camaraderie so why not have a place where you can take advantage of the way users want to be accommodated?

Baffling but then again if everyone understood it perhaps the Internet would move even faster and I must admit it moves fast enough already for my blood.

Is your site still a billboard or have you taken steps to move into the next realm of possibility? Tell me how.

I couldn’t agree more. With the advent of widgets, social widgets and sites like facebook, twitter, myspace and YouTube a site can do so much more these days than just server up a bunch of stale pages and be a massive online catalog.
