Social Media Marketing

When researching an article about Klout, an algorithm that measures your alleged social media influence, I discovered how Klout’s founder, Joe Fernandez, came up with the idea. Turns out, he had to have his jaw rewired and couldn’t talk for 3 months. His communication outlet during the time of silence was Facebook. According to a Wired magazine profile, “Every time a family member or friend responded to one of his updates, he relished his ability to sway their behavior. And as he looked over his feed he saw countless other people doing the same thing, recommending products or activities to Read More

This month, business networking site, LinkedIn announced the acquisition of SlideShare for $118.8 million. SlideShare allows users to upload and share PowerPoint and other slide presentations with business users, either on the Slideshare site or embedded on blogs, websites and shared on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. SlideShare is sometimes known as the “dark horse of B2B marketing”. It’s an interesting move. SlideShare lacks the size of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn, and its growth isn’t anything as remarkable as Pinterest. Certainly SlideShare’s typical content of corporate PowerPoint presentations isn’t capturing the imagination of the popular culture. Read More

The past few months have been very busy and interesting at Dinkum. Not only have we continued to grow very quickly (another 50% this year seems likely), but the Internet has become more complicated as well. The compounding effect is that all of our clients (large and small) are looking to deploy more impactful campaigns using a broader set of tools whose complexity has increased. It’s clear also that results (ROI) matter more than ever. Today, as I worked with Seth (social media) and Kerri (PPC) on one of our campaigns, I delighted in the fact that I was unconsciously Read More

For the longest time, Hangouts On Air on Google+ was for a limited number of people. I was one of the lucky ones who had a chance to beta test it while it was in its infancy. Now it’s open to the public and the creativity and innovation on Google+ has grown exponentially. People are coming up with some great new concepts for shows and podcasts using this feature. Here’s a run down of what to expect from Hangouts On Air (HOA): You don’t have to be a media celebrity to have fun with HOA. Just get out there and Read More

Have you heard of Klout? In its own words “Klout measures influence online using data from your social networks. Anywhere you have an online presence, you have the opportunity to influence people by creating or sharing content that inspires actions such as likes, retweets, comments and more. The more engagement your posts receive, the more influential you are. Klout uses this information to provide you a Klout Score that measures your overall influence.” The score is from 0-100 – the higher your score, the more influential you are in their calculation. The average score is 20 (not 50) and ranked Read More

More and more studies are finding that too much choice leads to poorer decision making. Sounds crazy and contradictory, I know. I read a fascinating opinion piece in the Sydney Morning Herald (Dinkum has strong Australian roots, after all) by Andrew Leigh that summarised some interesting research on this topic. Here are the best bits:- In a share-trading experiment, two groups of university students were pitted against one another. One team saw only share prices, while the other team could also consult experts and media reports. The result? The better-informed team ended up reacting to rumours and gossip, made too Read More

With more than 100 million views, KONY2012 has certainly captured worldwide attention. Don’t know what I’m talking about? In brief, US-based organization called ‘Invisible Children’ created a thirty minute video and campaign to highlight the plight of Ugandan children stolen from their families and enlisted as child soldiers. The man responsible for the kidnapping and abuse is Joseph Kony, who ranks #1 on the International Criminal Court’s most wanted list. So far, he has evaded capture. Invisible Children has mapped out a campaign to galvanize and inspire all citizens to sign a pledge and lobby cultural influences (movie and music Read More

Best-selling, controversial writer, Bret Easton Ellis, set the Twitterverse alight over the weekend. For around five hours, he mused on what his American Psycho character, Patrick Bateman, might be up to these days and managed to gather fourteen pages of notes from his followers. Ellis tweeted: “1.00 am in LA and sitting at my desk finishing a script and I’m making notes on where Patrick Bateman’s now …” As it happens, I’m currently reading his book ‘Lunar Park’, a deconstructionist look at fame, settling down, self-absorption, American anxiety, and a freaky Terby doll. It’s bold, amusing and, Ellis’ signature style, Read More

There’s a new social media platform that’s broken through the pack. It’s called ‘Pinterest’ and works like a virtual pin board. See a cute picture or image you want to share? Easy. Simply ‘pin’ it to Pinterest and others can see it and share it. It seems everyone loves a photo. The platform is easy to use with visual content currently focused on cute animals, fashion, food, weddings, and home décor. Here’s how it looks. The question for Dinkum Interactive clients is – should you get on the virtual pin board? Firstly, some figures. Unique visitors to Pinterest grew 400% Read More

If you think you’re too busy for social media, think again. The days of one-way communication are slowly falling away in favor of engagement. Many business owners we meet say they don’t have time for social media – that it’s too time consuming. This can be true, but social media is where the conversation is being held. If a comment is made about your business on Facebook, Google+, Yelp, or Twitter  – good or bad – you don’t want to miss the opportunity to respond. So, how can your company use social media without it taking over your life? •Set Read More
